The King, the Queen and the Vicious Strumpet: exhibition

kingqueen+strumpet_bannerThis exhibition of treasures from East Lothian’s archives ran in early 2014, but you can still view it online in these pages.

The King is Robert the Bruce; the Queen is Mary Queen of Scots; and the Vicious Strumpet is Elizabeth Golight, whose story appears in our collection of criminal registers. They are just a few of the characters you’ll meet at this exhibition, which showcases records never before seen on display in East Lothian.

Here you can explore the exhibition online, watch a video about it  and discover events and activities that will give you a chance to explore further.

Dating back to 1318, the records detail almost every aspect of the county’s history. They include burgh charters and court books, school log books and registers, as well as records relating to the poor, militia, turnpike road trusts and trade incorporations. We hope the exhibition inspires you to explore the archives and discover East Lothian’s past for yourself. If you would like to see more, come and visit the Archive and Local History Centre, where staff will be happy to help – we are also running some special events to show you more behind the scenes.
