- Description: sepia paper mounted photo by W Black, Dunbar, shows cricket team outside wooden building with score board, pale blue mount.
These crickets were photographed at Cowan's Park in Dunbar around 1905, when Dunbar cricket club hosted a tournament involving themselves, the county team (the subject of this photograph) and teams from Belmont and Clackmannan, amongst others. Haddingtonshire's opening batsman was Sir AW Baird, centre front.
Around 1900 Haddingtonshire's cricket team contained a mixture of gentry, who might have played the game at their schools, and local enthusiasts. In this photograph only the captain has a cap with a club badge and full whites, the rest making do with an approximation standard cricketing costume.
Cowan's (later Countess) Park in Dunbar was a residual part of the town's Inner Common, retained after much of the rest had been sold to defray the debt incurred by building a new harbour. The Park was used for galas and sports, including football and cricket.
