Dear Mr Buchanan, unfortunately the John Gray Centre does not hold any lists of military personnel. If you can provide a date of birth we could have a look through Ancestry in the hope of getting parents and location of birth. Alternatively (for pre 1841) we could look through the Old Parish Registers of Tranent and Prestonpans to find out where the gentleman was born. I hope this is helpful.

I am researching a “John Stewart, a Private in Sir James Sutties Troop of East Lothian Cavalry and Agnes Summers of this parish (Craig by Montrose, in Forfafshire) were matrimonially contracted.” This took place 1st April1796, and was extracted from an Old Parochial Regidter, the parish of Craig, and county of Forfar.

Would there be any list of volunteers/conscripts of the Sir James Sutties Troop of the East Lothian Cavalry? I am trying to prove this John Stewart to originate in Prestonpans or Tranent parishes.
