- Object Name: postcard
- Accession Number: 1998.47
- Date: 07/1919
- Description: sepia photographic postcard; full length portrait of white bearded man in full A O Foresterer`s regalia, standing in front of a stone building wall
This is Peter Walker dressed in the regalia of a Chief Forester of the Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters. Annual subscriptions to the Order supported ill or pensioner members and their families before the introduction of universal old age pensions and sickness benefits.
This sepia photograph was taken at Athelstaneford during July 1919. It shows a bearded man dressed in a uniform, with several decorated sashes over a fur-trimmed tunic; in his left hand he is supporting a curved, metal trimmed hunting horn.
The Ancient Order of Foresters had many separate 'Courts', in many towns and villages. The ethos of the Society was expressed by reference to a mythological fraternity of woodsmen and was reinforced by wearing ceremonial dress and carrying symbolic artefacts.
