The natural beauty of the countryside and coastline around East Lothian has inspired many artists over the centuries. This coastal scene was painted by the Edinburgh artist, William Marshall Brown, (RSA, RSW, 1863 - 1936).
This oil painting shows two young girls wading through the shallows on the lookout for mussels, which would be used as fishing bait. The taller girl carries a wicker creel on her back.
William Marshall Brown RSA, RSW, was born in Edinburgh in 1863. He travelled throughout Britain and Europe producing oil and watercolour paintings. He particularly enjoyed figurative and landscape painting.
