The East Lothian Council museum collection holds over 20,000 items, with more being added all the time. The collection focuses mainly on the social history of East Lothian and you can find out more about this by visiting our permanent exhibition, ‘The Land, the Sea, the People’, at the John Gray Centre.
Many of the objects in the museum catalogue are listed here and many of them include images.
Searching on this website, you will find items that are in the John Gray Centre, and also objects that are held at our other museums. However, we have much more in the Museum Store in Haddington, and if you find something on this website that you can’t view at any of the museums, please contact us to find out more.
We use our collections in exhibitions, for education and outreach projects and for display but only about 1% of this vast and varied collection can be displayed in our museums and libraries at any one time. However, our purpose built environmentally-controlled store at the Museums Service Headquarters is publicly accessible. Requests are available to see specific objects and collections via the Collections Officer. Access to the collections is FREE and available to anyone by prior appointment and group visits can also be arranged.
Calling all Postgraduates!
An exciting opportunity exists for a BSHS Engagement Fellowship with East Lothian Museums Service. We are seeking applications from graduates with a relevant degree for a Fellowship funded by the British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) to start early 2020. The successful Engagement Fellow will be based at the Museums Service HQ in Haddington and will work with a collection of historical medical instruments, updating the database with more information about the objects and gaining valuable transferable exhibition and communication skills.
For further information including role description and details of how to apply, please email [email protected]
Closing date for completed applications 09:00 hrs on 2nd December 2019.
Interviews will take place w/c 16/12/19.
For further information on accessing collections please visit the East Lothian Council website. Please note that there are limited refreshment facilities at headquarters but catering facilities are available locally in Haddington town centre.
If you have more information about any of the objects you find on this website, please do leave a comment at the relevant record, and we will follow it up as soon as we can. Everyone will be able to see your comments, and they will be able to leave their own too. You can also upload your own images if you have a related object that you would like to show on the website, or that you think would add to the knowledge in our catalogue.
Our catalogue is a work in progress and we are constantly working to update it; use the search option above to search our existing database.
