We welcome and value volunteers at the John Gray Centre, where we have a variety of activities and jobs to get involved with.
Our volunteers help us with events and activities, work with us to create educational (and other) resources, photograph events and objects, help digitise some of the objects and documents in our collections – and more! Browse our Flickr stream to see some of the events and activities our volunteers help with.
We aim to offer our volunteers a rewarding experience, as well as training and support. We can also provide placements for school and university students looking for hands-on experience of working in the cultural sector.
At present our most urgent need is for support for our Good Memories Café for people with dementia, and their carers.
1: Hands-on support at our Good Memories Café for people with dementia and their carers:
We are looking for people to help run this monthly event, by welcoming those who come, chatting and making them feel at ease, showing and talking about some of the pictures from our collections, playing board games, joining in with singing, knitting, sewing or whatever other activities that day’s visitors show an interest in. Help with supplying refreshments/baked goods would be greatly appreciated too! We are hoping that ultimately this will become an entirely volunteer-run event – it’s a great opportunity to get involved with the local community, and already we have seen that this kind of activity is much appreciated. Contact us by emailing [email protected], phoning 01620 820 680, or pop in and ask to speak to one of us. Find out more about it here.
2: Transcriber of oral histories:
We are gradually building up a small collection of oral histories, but to make them easier to catalogue, store and access, as well as help make them available to people who can’t hear or access audio, we need them to be transcribed. We need someone to: listen to our audio files and type them up; check the typed text for typos, and correct them; list any key words/subjects that would make the histories easier to catalogue and find.
3: Resources development:
Help with resources development work: trails, guides and fun activities for visitors of all ages to the museum at the John Gray Centre.
4: Accessible labelling:
Help creating large print (etc) labels and information for the museum.
