Industry & Social Change (1800–Present)

Preston Mill, East Linton

East Lothian is not only agriculturally rich, but has an abundance of mineral wealth too. Mining has a long history in East Lothian, whether for coal or lime, while the coastal salt pans supported the fishing industry.

Cloth mills and engineering have also long been an important part of East Lothian’s economy, while brewing and malting are still significant industries here.

Trades and friendly societies developed over this time too.
